A DESPERATE ENGAGEMENT. POINT BLANK ARTILLERY FIRE. B.v Tc!c.cr;uui.-P' , ess Association— CojiyriglK Received March 1, !>.'lo p.m. Rome, Friday. The official occupation of Margheb is announced. The Italians secretly assembled at daybreak and in silence advanced to the foot of the heights when a dash was made on the position held by the Turks and Arabs. A desperate resistance was made until a bayonet charge killed the majority of the defenders, including the Turkish commander, an Arab chief. An hour and a-half after the commencement of the fight the Italians were entrenched on the heights. Fivo hundred Turks and Arabs attacked these positions throughout the day. The Italians replied with a murderous fire from machine guns. The artillery at point blank range did terrific execution and drove off the attacking party, killing five hundred Arabs.
