FATALITY AT TAUMARUNUI.
A SHOCKING ACCIDENT. A sad accident occurred at Taumarunui on Wednesday last resulting in the death of a young man named Victor (Ray) Fitzmaurice. It appears that the young fellow was about to commence work for Mr Albrechtsen, butcher, at Taumarunui. It is customary for the butcher to send for orders to the mills, the messenger travelling hy the timber train. Fitzmaurice was snaking a preliminary trip to the mills and was returning on a train loaded with logs. He was sitting on the front of a truck and by some means the truck in the rear ran on to the other, Fitzmaurice being crushed between the ends of two logs. He was taken to the Taumarunui Hospital, but it was seen that the case was hopeless and death occurred about three hours subsequent to admission. Deceased was very well known at Te Kuiti, where he had resided for some years. He was a keen footballer, and was for some time an active member of the local Fire Brigade. Widespread regret was expressed when the news of the unfortunate occurrence was received.
