The South Auckland Kacing Club opened its annual meeting cn the Claudelands, at Kirikiriroa on Friday. The weather on the first day was showery. The second day showed a decided improvement and there was a large attendance. The racing on the first day was of an interesting character, only two first favourites being successful, while several long priced outsiders scored. The South Auckland Cup produced a field of eleven. The second day produced equally good racing. The Maiden Plate and the Welter Handicap were both won by Manuwera, Whittaker being the jockey cn both occasions. The Short's Handicap, a four furlong race, was an exciting contest between Bogey, Mighty Atom and Hyperion finishing in that order, with only the difference of a neck between each of them. Mighty Atom was favourite with the winner second fancy. The Waikato Handicap was a good race and was captured by Sir Artegal. Miss Livonia and Admiral Soult had a hard fight for second honours, the former just getting second place by a head. Miss Livonia was almost totally neglected on the. machine. Bonny Jean, a full sister to Capitol and Red McGregor, annexed the Hurdle race on both days. On the first day 3he paid close on half a hundred. Mavourneen was runner up on each occasion.
