Correspondence.—A notification was received from the Noxious Weeds Inspector, requesting the council to cut the noxious weeds on the roads, particularly the Esplanade. On Mr Cowley's motion it was decided to engage a man to cut the noxious weeds eleven yards from ratepayers' boundaries.— A letter from a person residing at Mangaweka, brought up a subject that created a lot of discussion. The writer stated that he had seen from the reports of the council's meeting as published in the Chronicle that the council contemplated inaugurating a night soil service, and as he had some years' experience in that department and offered his services, etc. ' Mr Osmond reported that Mr Bennett, Health Officer for the district, had been to Otorohanga, and in the absence of the chairman an 3 town clerk, he had an interview with him, who strongly advised the council to institute the pan system, and gave a lot of information as to how the council should proceed in the matter of getting a satisfactory service. Eventually it was proposed by Mr Vicary and seconded by Mr Osmond, that specifications be drawn up and tenders be invited for the removal of night soii in patent covered pans, and to be ploughed into ground provided by the council; and alternately foe tenders for removal to ground provided by the tenderer. The matter of deciding whether the whole township with an area of about 200 acres, should be brought into the night soil service, or only special closely inhabited parts should be rated created a lot of discussion and ended by Mr Vicary's proposal being carried. The propqsal wa3 that a part only of the tomvship should be subject to the sanitary bylaw and a meeting of the council be held on Friday to discuss what portions of the town be brought under the by-law.
Mr Bowlin's account was passed for. paymentThe town clerk presented the district electors' roll for ratiiieation of the council in accordance with section G of tho "Municipal Corporations Act." The area of the township is 185 acres and th" capital value ,£28,474, and amount of rates collect- i able is ,^l(i. r ) '2s. Kegardinc the loan which has been provisionally applied for, it was do- ' cided that it would be acivisabie, if possible, to proceed with some, of the works snggeßted by the engineer, particularly the metalling of (he main streets before the summer was too far advanced, and it was de- ; cided to consult the council's solicitor (Mr Hoskinp), as to whether the ! council could proceed with the matter, and if s (| . to commence the work at once.
