King Country Chronicle Saturday, Feb. 3, 1912. THE AGRICULTURAL SHOW.

The inauguration of an Agricultural and Pastoral Show in the district marks a further step in the progress which is so strongly evidenced in the King Country. When first projected it was considered by some to be early

days for such an important undertaking, but time and experience have again vindicated the opinions of the optimistic spirits of the community. It is gratifying to learn that satisfactory entries have been received in all classes for the show, and that given fine weather the success of the function is assured. It is in the promoting of such functions that the

sense of citizenship, and the obliga-

tion of the individual to the comfinds its most worthy outlet. That our district is well in the van in such matters gives rise to a feeling of satisfaction that our settlers are of the stamp who realise their public duty, and are content to co-operate for

the common good. There is, moreover, small danger of our people being rendered lethargic by a feeling of complacency over the success of any particular function. On all hands can ba seen opportunities for the further exercise of the public spiirt, and any satisfaction, born of success in one particular branch, can be readily turned to dissatisfaction over th-3 manifold obligations which remain yet unfulfilled in other directions. It

ia ever so in a new and progressive district, and our people are learning that the true value of success is that it leads irresistibly to further and better efforts in other directions. We heartily congratulate those connected with the Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the manner in which their work has been accomplished. To the president, vice-president and other members uf the executive a

special word of praise is due, while

those who are undertaking the onerous duties a stewards will be as fully entitled to commendation when their labours have been finally accomplishfid. A word to the public in the

same connection may not be amiss, for by the loyal support of the public in both town and district the ultimate hall mark of success .is placed upon the efforts of the officials. That such support will be accorded in no uncer-

tain manner there can be no doubt.

Few objects are so deserving of the unstinted support of all as the Agicultural Show. By the promoting of such Junctions the staple industries of the county are encouraged and assisted, while their educational value to all cannot be over estimated. The forthcoming show should mark the foundation of an institution which will assuredly exercise a powerful and beneficial influence in the district, both in the commercial and industrial sense, and in that social sense which is such an important factor in shaping the destiny of any district.
