BACKBLOCK TELEPHONES.
A MODIFIED PROJECT,
Mr W. A. Thorns, Mariga-a-hae, informed a Chronicle representative this morning that he had received a communication from the Telegraph Department, stating that they had decided to abandon the erection of the telephone line between Kiritehere and his place. Fresh bonds had been forwarded for signature with the guarantee reduced from £;H) to £oo per year. He had not heard how the Kiritehere and Pomerangi .settlers were viewing the matter, but he should think it would not be a favourable propoistion to them. The new intention would prevent those settlers from direct communintion as all their business would have to go through the Kavvhia oflice io Hamilton with the result that they would be cut 01l from bureau comunicatiuii wth Te Kuiti. The step to be taken was particularly hard on settlers as the original objective was communication with Te Kuiti.
