King Country Chronicle Saturday, January 20, 1912. TE KUITI DAIRY FACTORY.
The opening of the new dairy factory at Te Kuiti on Monday next will mark a new era in the town. A further step in the march of progress has been taken, from which there can be no going back. That the district would develop into dairying country has long been held by those best fitted to express a sound opinion on the question, but it is a significant fact that dairying has been started in several outback localities for a season or two past. A combination of circumstaces including land tenure, and the fact that speculation in land paid better than dairying, led to delay in commencing in earnest the dairying industry in and around Te Kuiti. However, now that operations have been started on a permanent basis there is every reason to hope that the channel for quick and assured returns thus provided for the larmer will be thoroughly appreciated and taken advantage of. The land outback, and in other localities along the railway, is
Te Kuiti must prove of great aßßistance to settlors, who can supply at Te Kuiti, until conditions are favourable for establishing the nearer to hand. The fact; that the Te Kuiti company is « i Htal>linhr<i on the co-operative principle is highly satisfactory from the supplier's view point inasmuch as it assures to each individual the greatest possible advantages that can be obtained. The business ia as much that of any one suppiler as of another, and it is the duly of all to furthor it in every possible manner. When, as in the present instance, duty and self-interest lie together, there is little fear of the outcome. It iB to the obvious advantage of all the suppliers, bo they far or near, to support the factory to the utmost. Isy so doing they are assisting the progress of their own and adjoining district s, and bringing closer the day when the country will bo girdled with factories, and propscrity will smile upon all. For such is Iho history of the dairying industry. The thanks of the community are due to those who have promoted the factory. Under unusual conditions and with little organised support the promoters have pledged themselves to a heavy responsibility in the interests of the district. That their confidence is warranted there is little doubt, but the fact of taking the initiative and working together for the good of the whole community entitles them to the gratitude of the settlers. When, in addition, it is recognised that they have accepted a financial responsibility of considerable dimensions, therre is every reason to claim for them the hearty support of all.
