MOST VALUABLE OIL GUSHER

The "Scientific American" describes "A phenomenal oil gusher," the largest in the history of California, and ' perhaps the most profitable in the history of the world. This oil well is situated at Lakcview in the Maricopa oil field, 40 miles south-east of Bakersfield. It bc£an to spout on March 15, and with the exception of one day, when it was sanded up for eight hours, flowed continuously to the 31st, yielding 42,C00 barrels of oil every 24 hours. Since then the daily yield has been 42,000 to 45,000 barrels, and up to May 3,, the total yield has been 2,000,000. So strong is the rush of oil that it rises in a column from 170 to 240 ft. above the top of the derrick, which is itself 84ft. high. It has been found impossible to cap the spring in the usual way, and the oil forms a huge lake extending hundreds o! feet on each side of the derrick. The "gusher" promises to keep spouting for many months to come, and is said to be the most valuable in the world's history, far exceeding the famous Texas gusher in the Beaumont Oilfield.
