At the meeting of councillors and | ratepayers held in the Town Hal' last evening, in connection with the light- , ing question, the proceedings at one or two junctures were of a lively nature. The principal reason for the , most lively one was as to whether Mr Chambers, one of the proprietors of Dreadnought gas should be allowed to address the meeting. Protests were made on the grounds that Mr Chambers was not a ratepayer, and that it would be unfair to other owners of petrol gases. His Worship the Mayor pointed out that they were present to get all the information they could about lighting. Mr Chambers was allowed to proceed on the ground* that he dealt only with petrol gas. Just before the premises ot the Farmers' Company in Saturday a to the managing directory Mr A. J. Storey, by the employees, as a token of their esteem and gooddwill on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The gift took the form of a canteen, containing silver and cutlery, and the presentation was made by Mr G. F. McCullagh, who on behalf of his colleagues, conveyed to Mr Storey their best wishes for future happiness. • j
