AN INOPERATIVE COUNTY.

THE POSITION OF AWAKINO.

The continued inactivity of the people of Awakino in not bringing their county into operation is one that calls for comment. If the Awakino County became operative, there would be a "little over 90 ratepayers, the majority of which are small settlers and are resident north of the Waikawau, the majority of whom are in favour of doing something in the matter. The delay has really been caused through a squabble which has been in existence as to whether the county should be sub-divided and part each be allocated to the Clifton, Waitomo and Kawhia Counties, or whether Awakino should control its own destinies. The matter is one that should be dealt with by the settler as expeditiously as possible, because the tendency of the Government as to make grants to operative counties because they have the engineering staffs to control and supervise the work subject to the approval of the Public Works Department. Another point is that the Government has been encouraging loans and subsidies and if the Awakino County was in operation it would enable those settlers who wanted better roading facilities to help themselves.
