Hobbs and Rhodes opened for England against the bowling of Cotter and Hordern. Half an hour's play produced 28. At 2!) Hordern changed ends, Kelleway relieving Cotter. Rhodes took 45 minutes to make 10. At 43 Matthews replaced Hordern and appealed confidently for leg-before against Hobbs, but the umpire ruled against him. Matthews was bowling a fine length and kept the batsmen quiet and Rhodes nearly returned the ball to him.

Hobbs and Rhodes played out time, the score standing at 49. Both batted soundly and confidently.
