HUMUS IN THE SOIL.

The fermentation and putrefaction of decaying vegetable matter in the soil will quickly cause the ground to become sour, or, in other words, excessively acid. It is then that a neutralising agent such as lime or magnesia is required. These agents must be incorporated with the soil at the greatest possible depth, for the neutralising effects of the lime are only active to the extent to which they are mixed with the soil during the different processes of cultivation.
