RACING.
The Auckland Sujimer meeting, which was brought to a conclusion on Tuesday last, may be written down as a great success. The weather conditions throughout were favourable, and the on each day were large, while tlie amount of money handled by the totalisator wa3 an enormous increase on anything handled previously at one meeting, and easily established a record. The racing was good both in handicaps and weight-for-age events. By winning the Derby and Auckland Plate, Counterfeit fully established her claim to be the champion three-year-old of the season. General Latuur, the highly-bred sun of Soult and Merry Nif, perfomed extremely well, and opinions are freely expressed to the effect that he will develop into a high-class performer. Each time the colt has been produced on the track he has improved on his previous efforts and there are strong grounds for assuming that considerable further improvement is possible. Matserpiece ran badly and save his effort in the Grandstand Handicap, failed to show any indication of that form which secured for him the Canterbury Derby from the brilliant Counterfeit.
Among the two-year-olds Prince Soult showed up in particularly bright colours. Beginning modestly wtih a handicap the colt met all-comers at the finish and disposed of the best of hi 3 age in the Royal Stakes in a most convincing fashion. Winning Way and Culpirt were of little use to the Soult colt when it came to a finish.
The amount put through the totalisator during the meeting was easily a record for the Dominion, the previous best being the Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring meeting in November, when about £134,000 was dealt with. Last year the Auckland Club put through £94,791 and by increasing that amount to £176,908 this year it will be seen that the increase is phenomenal.
