BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION.

MR YOUNG RETURNED. The election of a councillor to fill the vacancy on the Te Kuiti Borough Council caused by the resignation of Mr D. J. Young, .was held yesterday. Two candidates went to the poll, Mr Young, who was being opposed by Mr Mostyn Jones. Considerable interest was taken in the election by the public, a total of 254 votes being recorded. The poll was taken by Mr G. Darbyshire, returning officer, assisted by Messrs Robinson and Dines.

The ballot resulted in Mr Young being re-elected by a majority of 36, he polling 145 votes to 109 recorded by Mr Jones. After the poll had been declared Mr Young delivered a short address to the ratepayers from the balcony of Mr Sims' boardinghuse. He thanked his supporters for the confidence they had reposed in him and assured them he would do his utmost to merit their confidence. Mr Young made reference to the duties of citizenship and urged the ratepayers to a keener interest in borough affairs, the first step towards which was seeing that their names were on the roll. Mr Julian also made a few remarks during the course of which he referred to Mr Young as a man with a strong backbone which was always coming to the front. At the conclusion cheers were given ior Mr and Mrs Young.
