THE BULL.
It is recognised fact among dairymen that the bull is more than half the herd, and of whatever breed he may be, ho must be purebred, for no other animal possesses the power to transmit the required characteristics j of to his progeny. He should he large ! of his class and fairly muscular. Tin; j head should be masculine, but not ; coarse; the neck rather long than short, with moderate crest; the skin ; moderately thick, but oi' a soft, yielding character, being whats j termed a good handler. As the milk I is separated from the blood it is neces : sary that there should be a large qnan- J tity of blood in his system, and conse- j quently that the blood vessels be large ; and numerous. The escutcheon prin- i ciple of judging the milking qualities i of a cow is just as valuable ;n deter- ; mining the value of the male for get- j ting good stock famous for milk product ion. CURING HOTS. An American farmer advocates; chopping up half a gallon of small ; potatoes, salting them well, and i feeding them to the allVetot! animals, i Some horses will not cat them readily, I but if they can be induced to do so re- j lief will follow in less than an hour. ; Another remedy that is said to give . good results is:--Take two quarts of : new milk and one quart of molasses; ; mix thoroughly, and pour down the i throat. Fifteen minutes later give ■ two quarts of warm sage tea. llalf . an hour after give three pints of olive oil, or, in place of this, a double handful of salt in three pints of warm water. This should complete the cure. The remedy is said to act as follows: - -The first dose causes the bots to let : go their hold, the second one puckers , them up, and the third carries them i awav. j
