RAILWAY EXCURSION FARES.
KEEN INDIGNATION. The question of excursion fares from Te Kuiti to Auckland during the holiday season was discussed at the committee meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on last week. Those present expressed keen indignation at the fact of Te Kuiti townspeople and settlers in the surrounding districts being prevented from getting excursion rates by either of the midnight expresses. It was pointed out that shop employees and others who had to work late on Saturday night had no other portion than to pay full rates if thev wanted to get to Auckland on Sunday morning, also that if they waited until Monday for the day express so as to get excursion rates that those having to start work on Wednesday morning would have to return by the day express the following day. It was considered that it was a grave injustice to Te Kuitiaus to be debarred from participating in the railway excursion benefits. The secretary, Mr Mostyn Jones, was deputed to lay the matter before Mr White, stationmaster, and, if necessary, tele graph to the head of the Railway Department.
A Chronicle representative, in conversation with a number of employees this morning, ascertained that much indignation was being expressed. They could not understand why they should be prevented from having excursion rates. All were of opinion that they did not see Te Kuiti should not have tha concession as a large number intended to make the trip.
