Newton King reports
On Sth :nst. I had a successful sale of pedigree and grade Jerseys on account of Mr A. Hodgkinson, Takaka, Nelson. The cattle were in very fair condition considering the rough trip up and the driving about. Bidding was keen for all female stock, but the bulls did not meet with much competition. The top price, 65gns, was paid by Mr C. Goodson, of Hawera, for the pediigee cow "Silver May," and the cow "Sweet Pea XII." went to the same purchaser at 57gns. Other prices realised for pedigrees were— Cows 26 to 53gns, 2 year heifers 26h to o9gns, yearling heifers 16i to 2Signs, heifer calves 9 to ISigns, bulls 8 to 19gns, yearling bulls 02 to ISAgns grade cows £S 15s, grade heifers £3 10s to £9 ss, grade yearling bull £2 15s.
At Urenui on Monday. IHh inst., I had a good yarding at my fortnightly sale and a good attendance of the public. Bidding was best for IS months steers and 2 year heifers. Fifteen to 18 months steers made £2 16s 6d to £2 18s, 15 to IS months heifers, grade £1 2s to £2 14s, a pen of 15 months grade Jersey heifers met with very keen competition and realised £4 12s 6d, empty 2 year heifers £4 to £4 6s, 2 year heifers, Holsteins. empty £4 185,2 year steers £4 4s, 3 year bullocks £5 19s, store cows £2 to £2 10s, forward cows £3 lis to £4 6s, springing cows £5 IC3 to £6, springing heifers £5 10s to £6, bulls £3 lSs to £6 10s.
On the 12th inst., in my Stratford yards, I had a good entry of cattle, but got little enquiry as most of those offered were backward. Early calvers made £3 to £5 15s, springing cows £5 to £7.
On thß same day at my ordinary Stratford sale I had a good muster and an improved attendance notwithstanding the wretched weather; 15 to IS months steers and heifers met with good competition at the hammer and sold at better values than at recent sales. Two pens of good conditioned 3 year bullocks sold under the hammer at £6 3s, yearlings mixed, poor 21s to 255, 15 to 18 months heifers .£2 10s to £3 5s Gd, 15 to IS months steers £2 is 6d to £3 3s, empty 2 year heifers, poor £3 10s to £4 5s 6d, fat cows £4 17s 6d to £6 3s, fat heifers £4 16s. bulls £2 to £3, grade Holstein bulls £4 7s Gd to £5.
At Stony River on 13th inst., I_ had a good yarding of good conditioned cattle. The enquiry was good for 15 to IS months steers and heifers and for 2 year steers. Bidding was also good for store cattle; 15 to IS months steers £2 lis to £3 3s, 15 to IS months heifers £2 15s to £3 Ss, 15 to 18 months mixed £3 Os 6d, 2 year empty heifers £3 Is to £4 19s, 2 year steers £3 14s to £4 ss, store coW3 £2 3s to £3 15s, forward cows £3 7s to £4 3s, fat cows springing cows £7 3 53, springing heifers £7 15s, bulls £4 to £7, weaner pigg 7s, store pils 3s.
