BOROUGH COUNCILLOR RESIGNS.

AN INADVERTENT INFRINGEMENT. As the outcome of a question which was ngised at the last meeting of Te Kuiti Borough Council, the resignation of Cr Young was yesterday handed in. Interviewed by a Chronicle representative on the subject Mr Young said that he adopted the course on the advice of his solicitor. An inadvertent infringement of the Municipal Corporations Act had been made by hirn, and when that was made clear he took the only course possible and resigned his seat. Mr Young said he had felt very much inclined to allow the matter to be taken to Court in order that the matter should be threshed oul and the whole facts placed before the public. However, he had decided to stand for re-election on the council and would explain the position from a public platform. This, he felt, would oniy be right, in justice to himself and to those ratepayers who had supported him at the council election. The technical breach in consequence of which he had been compelled to resign, said Mr Young, might have been committed by anyone. He had taken a sub-contract from Mr Williams, who was building the Council Chambers. The sub-contract was not taken until the building was well under way,and he had not the slightest idea of infringing the Act. Tnere had been no competition for the job as far as he was concerned.

Mr Williams, when interviewed on the subject, bore out Mr Young's statement. He said the system of contracting followed by him was entirely different to the system usually followed locally. He tendered for all hia jobs independently and made his own prices. When he wanted work done he obtained prices from sub-con-tractors and they had nothing whatever to do with the original work. He regretted the fact that an unintentional infringement had been made by Mr Young, who.he hoped, wouid stand for re-election.
