THIRTY SECOND BALLOTS.

Taumarunui won by Opposition.

The large number of second ballots which have yet to be decided render it an extremely difficult matter to forecast the result of the genera! election. However, it is safe to assume that the Opposition Party will be materially strengthened and may even win an actual majority of seats. At present the Opposition has won 22 seats and the Government 20, while two have been gained by Independent

The majority of Mr Wilson is officially given a3 99, but the figures listed make a difference of 31. Probably the difference is accounted for by the several smaller returns having reached the Returning Officer subsequent to the receipt of the published figures.

GOVERNMENT 20. OPPOSITION 22.

THE OPPOSITION WIN POOR MEW SEATS.

Liberals. Of the actual votes polled it is interesting to note that 216,137 votes were recorded for Liberal cadidates, while for the Opposition 177,157 votes were cast, Labour and Socialist candidates received 44,594 votes. It will thus be seen that little difference exists between the two chief parties. The number of Liberal candidates who stood was 112 and Opposition 177.
