Mr Virary I hanked the members for their weieom<' at; his first; meeting of the Otorohasiga Town Hoard. He said he was not a new hand at the work as lie had s( m-vi d on public bodies in other pari.'- of (he island and when he took a public position lie a ways tried to do his duly t hnrnughly. There were a number of Clings that required doing and he intended to bring then before the council until they were done. He sincerely hoped they would ail pull together and shake things up a bit,
The chairman said that at the council's invitation Mr Sims had come to Otorohanga and no had been shown round and the works that were required pointed out. Mr Sims would prepare plans and estimates of the work. Tt was suggested to prepare a comprehensive scheme for the whole township and to apply for a loan. The main streets were to be attended to first and the side streets would fit in with the general scheme later on.
Mr Vicary thought they ought to get to work on Maniapoto street straight away with what money was available from the general rates and make the work to fit in with the general scheme which would take some time to get ready. There was no doubt Maniapoto street was in a very bad state and gave visitors a poor impression of the place, which ought to be one of the foremost in the King Country considering the good quality of the. surrounding country. He wanted the matter put in hand right away so that they could get the roads fixed up before winter and the summer was half over, although we had not yet had any summer weather. Position of Clerk to the Board.—lt was decided to leave until next monthly meeting the appointment, of a clerk'in the hopes that the council would have more applicants for the postiion. Letters from Farmers' Union. A letter was received from the secretary Farmers' Union covering a letter from Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce re regulating travelling retailers.— The clerk was instructed to reply that the council were passing a by-law to try and meet (he difliculty.
Application for Grazing License. — An application for a license to graze three dairy eows on the streets met with considerable discussion and it was eventually decided not to grant the license as in wet weather the cattle would not improve the roads and there was great danger to children playing on the roads if cattle and horses were allowed to graze. Creamery Road.--On Mr Vicary 's motion it was decided to employ a team and have the holes filled up on the. road from the school to the creamery and also to put a few loads of metal on the approach to the Waipa bridge in Maniapoto street as well as two side rails to keen stray horses from breaking down the embankment. Nighi-soil Hy-inw.- -The chairman proposed, and it was carried, ihat the board bring into force t!a- by-laws relating to ui:;ht-snii nriwi, s. Ihoposed by Messrs Vicary : mi Rowley. that the clerk- procure a special pan. Hie same pattern as used in Te Kuil.i. and that a commit ice- of the whole council be appointed to meet, on December loth'and decide on the, number of pans to be ordered, and that such puns be sold to the resident at cost price.-- Carried. Mr Osmond brought up the matter of the town Hall, ami it was decided to wait for the engineer's estimate, of cost of works and to pir.ee that matter together with a hali scheme before the ratepayers. The cleric was intruded to write the Tauniarunui Council asking for information in the matter of getting the Government to acquire, the freehold of the township and to report at next meeting.
