RACING.

A cable from Sydney on Tuesday stated that as a result of the antibetting legislation in America the St. James stud, one of the most famous in the United States, comprising 155) animals, was being brought to Sydney entirely. It was to arrive in a specially chartered steamer on Wednesday. Mr Irving WheatcroCt, the owner, declares that the racing conditions have readied such a pass in America that there is no longer any pleasure in racing and breeding thoroughbreds. The stud includes the famous sires Cisarion and Kismet.

The Alexandra Racing Club, Pirongia, have fixed their annual race meeting to be held on December 26th, in connection with which the following programme has been decided upon : —■ Handicap Hurd'e Race, one mile and a-half; Maiden Handicap, seven furlongs; Alexandra Cup on mile and a-quarter; Handicap Trot one mile and a-half; Shorts Handicap four furlongs; Handicap Trot two miles; Flying Stakes five furlongs. Nominations for all events close on December 6th at 8 p.m.

The Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting opened on Wednesday in showery weather. The fields were large and the racing throughout was interesting. The improving Sphinx won the St Andrew's Handicap after getting a break on Sir Aitegal, who was favourite. The latter finished second, with the remainder of the field in a bunch. The meeting is to be concluded to-day. A large number of visiting horses are expected at Ellerslie for the Auckland Cup meeting. Besides the teams from the South island, including Sir George Clifford's, Mr Greenwood's, and the Messrs Stead's, there will be a large contingent from Wellington and Havvke's Bay. Local owners who are intending to compete at the forthcoming Te Kuici meeting will require to send their charges along very shortly. The state of the local track precludes its use for working on at present, but given fine weather there should be sufficient time to put the finishing touches on their animals.
