MANGAPEHI.

Own Correspondent

On 2.6 th inst. the local cricket eleven journeyed by trucks to Tiroa, to play the combined bush teams there, and again suffered a defeat at their hands. The first innings of the Mangapehi team was something of a record for the whole; side was dismissed for 31 runs, 1 bye! The wicket was essentially a bowler's wicket, the balls coming off extremely fust. The combined team compiled GO (D. McCracken 13. extras 14) in their first attempt. In the second innings the Mangapehi men steadied clown considerably, making 99 for the loss of five 1 wickets (A. MeCracken 10, G. Hill 24, P. Walsh 41). At this stage it was considered advisable to declare the innings closed, as there was only one hour of time left. Mangapehi were thus faced with the task of dismissing their opponents under the hour for less than 50 runs. They came very close to doing <t, too, as they captured eight wickets before the necessary runs were completed, just three minutes under the hour. The finish created a great deal of excitement. J. Gilbert captained the home team and B. W. Hayson the visitors. Scores:—
