racing. r The Auckland Racing Club's Spring meeting opened at Ellersilo on Wednesday and will be continued to-day. The City Handicap was won by the ex-Aueklander, Coromandel, who won a good race in fast time (2.8 4-5). Master Wairiki and Maxwell filled the places. The Guineas provider; something of a sensation, the Soult— Merry Nif colt, General Latour, gaining a head victory over Miss Winsome. After the race Deeley, the rider of Miss Winsome, was asked by the stewards to explain his handling of his mount. He stated the mare was not herself and would not leave her opponent when called upon for an effort, the explanation being -accepted.

'['he Welcome Stakes went to Dido, a smart filly by Soult —Lady Regel. Miss Livonia accounted for a double in the Shorts and Flying Handicaps, while the good-looking St. Amans scored in the Hobson Handicap. The Melbourne Cup is always contested on the first Tuesday in November. This year's race will therefore be decided on Tuesday next. The New Zealand owned Bridge is held to have more than an outside chance of earning distinction in this year's contest. The New Zealand Cup which is run today promises to provide an interesting contest though outside two or three the field can hardly be termed high class. The Waikato owned Domino is the only Auckland representative in the race but this horse's latest displays in public do not tend to show his chance of winning- particularly bright. Goodwin Park who has recent winning form to recommendhim is held in most favour by the public but there is ample material for a surprise. The Stewards Handicap is always an exciting race and this year the field of sprinters promises to be quite up to past records. Of the top weights Equitas, Madam Madcap, and Undecided are well thought of and in some quarters Dazzilng is held to be equal to the task set her.

At the last meeting of the club it was unanimously decided to confer the honour of life membership on Mr G. Finlay in recognition of his valuable services in connection with securing the green for the club. A gold medal is also to be presented to Mr Finlay. It is gratifying to see the clrb recognising in the best possible manner the services gratuitously rendered to the club by Mr Finlay, for to his efforts the club undoubtedly owes the possession of its fine green.

At Pio Pio the local team has got going, and members are anxious to arrange a game with Te Kuiti. Therp is every reason why an exchange of visits should be made and no doubt efforts will be made to arrange matches later un,
