OPENING CELEBRATIONS
CONCERT AT THE TOWN HALL
To celebrate the approaching opening of the new Presbtyerian Church ihe Rev. W. Woolass, Te Awamutu, Moderator, presided over a numerous gathering which sat down to tea in the Town Hall last night. The function was followed by a social evening, during which what, was probably _ the finest concert of the season was given by visiting and local talent. In a happy speech the chairman opened he proceedings, and the items were interspersed by addresses from the Rsvs. White and A. C. Gow (Hamilton), which were appropriately and commendably brief. The following comprised the programme : Violin solo, "Calioh of Bagdad," Mr B. Clapham; song/ "A Wurld Between," Miss James; flute solo, Adante, (encore "Crown of Diamonds"), Mr A. K. Wrigley; song, "Idle Words" (encore "Still as the Night"), Mrs Cowan; song, "Thy Sentinel am I (encore "King Charles"), Mr Karl Atkinson; song, "Children's Home" (encore "The Kissing Bridge"), Mrs Darbyshire; song, "Roses" (encore "Mary of Argyle"), Mr A. K. Wrigley; song, " Will-o'-tbe-Wips," Mr A. Bla'cktnan; duet, "The Moon has raised her Lamp Above," (encored), Messrs A. K. Wrigley and K. Atkinson; song, "Peg Away." Mrs Cowan; song, "The Veteran's Song (encore "Down' the Vale"), Mr E. C. Tassell; song, "When May Comes In." Mrs Darbyshire; song, " Youth" (encored). Mr O. P. Owen; song, "Because," Mr Karl Atkinson. The accompaniments throughout were most skilfully played by Miss Ivy Graham, the success of the concert being very largely due to her painstaking efforts.
In the course of the evening a presentation was made to Miss I. McMeekan for collecting the highest amount towards the organ fund. The Rev. Armstrong made the presentation and took the' opportunity of extending the hearty thanks of the managers and himself towards all who had helped to make the celebrations a great success. Mr Lumrison read the balance-sheet during the evening, and the proceedings were concluded by the singing of the nosology and the pronouncement of the 'Benediction.
