MR FORBES' CANDIDATURE.
To the Editor gj r j have been informed that Mr Forbes', a candidate for the Taumarunui electorate, stated at Mr Wilson a ■meeting in Te Kuiti. that I invito 'him to enter the contest. I was not J ■present at that meeting myseli. but 3f Mr Forbes is correctly reported. I wish to most emphatically deny the assertion. It is fairly well known that I am a warm supporter of the Opposition Partv. and when I noticed a report of Mr Forbes' candidature in the papers, I immediately wrote on "behalf of the Reform Party in Tauma--runui) to Messrs Wilson, Forbes and ■Martin, organising secretary, suggesting .a conference of our people, "for the nurpose of trying to induce one of these gentlemen to retire from the contest. I pointed out the hopelessness of running two candidates against Mr Jennings. But I did not in any way lead Mr Forbes to believe that we favoured his candidature as against Mr Wilson. Mr Forbes could, quite set the matter at rest by publishing my letter -to him in the Chronicle.—l am. etc., T. McKEAN. Taumarunui, October 10th, 1811.
