RECIPROCITY WITH AUSTRALIA.

Asked if negotiations for a reciprocal tariff between New Zealand and Austalia have been entered into, the Prime Minister infomed Mr McLaren that he has received 110 communication from the Prime . Minister of Australia regarding the matter. "I should be exceeding glad to enter into negotiations for the establishment of a reciprocal tariff between Australia and New Zealand on mutually fair lines," added Sir Joseph Ward. A reduction in the import duty on Australian wines was suggested by Sir Arthur Guinness, who was informed by the Government that this would be considered if negotiations take place between this Government and the Government of the Commonwealth in reference to reciprocal trade relations being established with Australia on similar lines to those existing between New Zealand and South Africa.

Received October 7, 945. a.m. Melbourne, Thi3 Day

Mr Tudor has initiated negotiations with New Zealand regarding reciprocity, by despatching a request for information. He intends shortly to communicate with Canada.

Sir Joseph Ward's announcement that he Wuuld be glad to enter into an agreement similar to the one with South Africa he regarded as touching merely the fringe of the subject. The Commonwealth was more likely to want an agreement similar to that between New Zealand and Canada. Mr Fisher said he was an ardent advocate of reciprocity, and declared they must d-aw the countries nearer together.
