I (Own Correspondents)

Olorohanga

Our local creamery has been very busy fur the past week owing to a mishap at the Puketnala creamery. The boiler had burnt, through and the separator could not be wnrk.-r!. and al! the Puketarata suppliers bad to drive their milk to Otonihanga. It made a tine sight to see waggon alter waggon driving in procession with their live and six cans, and it was eloquent lestimoiiv to the quality of the Puketarata land.

Tiie associated auctioneers held I their regular eatl'e sale in the co- | operative saleyards. Otorohanga, on , Wednesday, 27th September. There. | was a good muster of all classes and i plenty or buyers, very little being | passed in. Young stock in particular ! were in good demand and brought | high prices. i A complimentary social was tendered to Mr H. A. Burchill on Seplem- | ber 27th, in Miss Hunter's Commercial Hotel, Otorohanga, by some of his gentlemen friends. Mr Forster was in the chair and in a ne.it speech said that he had known th:- guest of the evening for a number of years. Mr Burehil I had seen active service when he went to South Africa with the. Australian Rough Riders, and on coming to New Zealand he had taken up a farming section in Otorohanga and had plenty of active service in felling the bush and clearing his section. He had then sold his farm and gone as accountant to Johnson and Co.. and on that firm ceasing business he had been offered a position with Goodfellovv, Ltd., in To Aivamutu. Mr Burchill was a great sport and took an active part in whatever was going, whether football, cricket, tennis or dancing. Mr Forster was voicing the general feeling when he stated that Mr Burohili's removal would be a great loss to Otorohanga and he would be greatly missed. He was a man who made many friends but few enemies. On behalf of some of those friends Mr Forster presented Mr Burchill with a handsome leather travelling suit case'suifcably inscribed. Mr J. Ormsby and others also made suitable speeches expressing regret at Mr Burchill's departure and wished him success. In response to the toast of his health, which had been drunk with musical honours. Mr Burchill made the speech of his life. A large programme was gone through and good songs and recitations made the time pass very quickly and pleasantly.

It is reported that Mr Kent's coast section has changed hands. Mr Grant, of Hawkesbury, so it is said, being the purchaser. A line line of 200 young sheep for the latter gentleman passed through here the other day. So far no improvements have been effected to the Mangakokopu road, which, as a result of the present neglect, is in a sorry condition for traffic, being overgrown with scrub arid other rubbish. If some of these district roads are not better seen to in the matter of cutting overhanging scrub, they will soon deteriorate into Maori tracks, reminiscent of '-'e Rauparaha and his merry men of the days of yore. Heavy rains have fallen during the past week or two.
