MAORIS AT TAUMARUNUI.
THE KAINGA RESTRICTION
[ny tki,k<;raph.—-rai-ss asmm-i \thin.J We 11 intg on. Yesterday.
Mr Jennings presented a petition to Parliament on Wednesday from J. G. Burney and 155 others, asking that the area of the borough of Taumaninui should be excluded from the Wanganui Maori district, in order that natives living within the borough may be brought under the scope of its by-law?. It is stated that about 1904 an area of land forming the major portion of the present borough wa:; gazetted as a Maori kainga. In the opinion of the petitioners it is desirable that restrictions affecting Maori kaingas should no longer apply to the borough of Taumarunui.
