King Country Chronicle Wednesday, Sept. 20, 1911. TELEPHONE SERVICES.

* — During the past few years settlers in theWaitewheria district have been making excellent progress with the improvement of their district. There have been many pioneering difficulties experienced in that part for the want of communication, both as regards roads and telephones. Last year the first, communication was established when a telephone line was erected from Mangaroa to Mr Barnett's place, Waitewhena, a distance oi eleven miles. This line has been of considerable service to settlers, but is far short of the requirements of tho district. Tho community of interest of this rapidly developing part of tho King Country i 3 with Te Kuiti, and by the present mode of communication .settlors in order to speak to Te Kuiti have to ring up Mangaroa which has to connect them through Ongarue. From Te Kuiti end a line is eroded as far as Kaeaea, a distance of about .'JO miles, with the result that there i» only an intervening space of about ten miles to be completed to give direct communication with tho Ohura, It would not only be of great commercial value to the district, but woulcJ bring a large number of settlers into touch with the markets and doings oC the outside world. The present service with the Ohura is far from satisfactory, and the completion of this direct telephone lino is certainly one that, the Chamber of Commerce should take in hand. The completion of tho line would bo of immense service to< the district, and would render manyfacilities to both business people andi settlers. The present would bo am excellent time to take the matter irn hand and there is little doubt but that if proper representations were madt« immediately the department would recognise the importance of the line.
