At the instance of Mr Herries, a return has been presented to Parliament showing the acreage of land purchased by the Crown from the natives each year since the resumption of purchase in 1905, together with the area opened for settlement, and also that area occupied by Europeans under the provisions of the Land Act. The figures are as follows:—1906 : Area purcased, acres, nil; opened for settlement, acres, nil; 1907, 13,967 and 8000; 1908, 249,034; 1909, 6935 and 11,030; 1910, 15,57 and 54,501. Totals, 385,525 and 66,331. The above does not include any purchases under the Native Land Act of 1909.
