NIGHT SOIL DEPOT.

!. To the Editor. Sir, —In your report of the Borough Council meeting, held on Monday night, Cr Hardy is reported to have said he questiuned as to what amount of water went over the land and that he got no satisfaction. He surely must have forgotten that I asked permission from the Chairman to answer that question. I have several times seen two feet of water (not inches;, ofttimes more on the ground in question. I can also prove from a competent witness that he has ridden over the land with the water up to his horse's girths. What is more, after a flood the natives at the pa have had to clear two and three inches of deposit out of their wharas. His worship the Mayor and the members of the Sanitary Committee are at great pains to explain and get special evidence to show the harmless effect the dumping of nightsoil will have at other people's doors and polluting the water a number of people drink. Surely they could not have pointed out to the Health Officer some of the beautiful flats close to the. Borough near the base of the hills where the water never reaches. Oh, no; it was a much easier way to take the poor Maori's land, likely to give less trouble. It does not require the eyes of a seer to note how the land lies, or that the Council sat in judgment on their own case. However they have not got it yet. Thanking you, I am, etc., J. F. WALSH. 1
