BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ENGINEER'S REPORT,
A COMPREHENSIVE STATEMENT
The following is the report of the Borough Engineer as submitted at the last meeting of Te Kuiti Borough Council:
"I beg herewith to report that the Hill street contract is in a very unsatisactory condition; the contractors have left the work and refuse to do any more to it. There remains yet to be done the fillings at the commencement of the contract, the lowering of Hetet street, and the incidental other small jobs such as clearing out watertables, trimming, etc. I shall be glad of your Council's instructions in the matter. In connection with the above, I think it wise to point out that if the culvert to be laid to divert the water from Mr Wills' pronerty on to Mr Gresham's side is now done, it might pussibly invalidate Hale and East's contract, and I shall be glad of your instructions in this matter also. 1 have the work of getting out plans of Tawhana street in hand, and have altered specifications of carting.. With regard to crossing at the school ground, I shall be glad to have the exact point of the crossing pointed out to me to enable me to prepare the plan of same. Also more information as to the metalling of Rata street, viz., what metal is to be used in widening the present metal, and how it is to be measured. The formation of the Esplanade east from King street to within about 3 or four chains of Lawrence street has been completed, and the metal spread nearly up to Ngaronga street, which will enable several of the metal breakers to be paid up. I have tha drainage plans well in hand, and shall be very shortly in the position to call for tenders for same, if the Council so desires; but I am of opinion that this work should stand over for a time yst, as dry summer weather is very desirable for this work. When this work is commenced, it will be in my opinion desirable for the Council to employ a competent drain-layer of their own, and it will then be advisable to also have a clerk of works, as your drainage will require careful supervision. In conjunction with the Town ClerK. I have prepared a detailed estimate of the costs of street works by which it will be ssen that the cost to date has very approximately conformed with my rough preliminary estimate for loan proposals, and would have been less than these latter had not maintenance and other items been charged thereto. With regard to the reticulation of the water, I propose completing the six-inch main, but until Messrs Hale and East's contract is completed I cannot very well commence it; so that it will be necessary for something to be decided early as to their work. With regard to the balance of hard broken metal, I shall be glad of instructions as to where it is to be utilised, so that the men who have been engaged thereon can have their accounts squared up, the ground being too rough to be able to get at exact quantities by measuring where broker;." Tin following are the amounts of loan monies allocated and expended on the various streets within the Borough, the expenditure being to July 30th, 191] Queen street, estimate £2O8 —• expended £93; Seddon street, £315 5s —£l2o; Princess street, £75 ss£3O; King street and Princes street, including culverts, £IO2O Carroll street £2B0 —£314 2s; Ward street, £219—£58; Ngatai street, £159 10s £l9; Edward street, £IBB 10s—£72; Hill street, £830—£55; Duke street, £ll3—£9B; Rora street, £516; £240; King street east, £186; £32; Waiteti road, £3OO £25; Awakinoroad, £IOO--£75 ; Esplanade. £45 Sheridan street, £lO4 street east, metal, £lB6 —£25; Esplanade and Te Kuiti 2R, £6O0 —£291 10s; Rora street, £SO —£62 10s; Mangaorino road, £Boo—£3s; Green and Colebrook's subdivision, and roads leading thereto,£Bs0 —£739 Bs.
