FARMERS' UNION.

THE DOMINION CONFERENCE. One hundred and thirty-two remits are already on the agenda paper for the Dominion Conference of the Farmers' Union, which will be held in Wellington at the end of the month. They cover such important subjects as the land laws, the question of tenure, railways, public works, post and telegraph matters, defence, immigration. education, agricultural and pastoral questions, local bodies' powers, farmers in politics, the labour laws, in addition to which there are some twenty-five on miscellaneous matters. There is a protest against any more protection being given to the engineering trade under the tariff, and a call for substantial increase in the duty on all imported grain. Any increase in the import duty on hardware is objected to. Among the remits under the heading "public works" is one declaring "that all arterial roads and bridges should be constructed and maintained by the Government." Improvements will be sought in connection with rural telephones and country mail deliveries. The Government will be asked to consder the revision of the school syllabus with a view to the removal of anomalies under which country children now labour. There are several protests against the special rates levied on the railways on imported coal and timber, and two against the restriction on combined consignments of stock. Noxious weeds will receive a deal of attention, there being a number of remits calling for amendment or stricter enforcement of the Act. The need for passing the Local Government Bill is also to be discussed, and consideration will be given to the alleged unsatisfactory positipn brought about by the new method of electing local bodies, such as harbour boards.
