ELECTORAL CENSUS.

TO BE TAKEN SHORTLY. The Government has two tasks in preparation for the general election. One is the readjustment of electoral boundaries, and the other is the compilation of electoral rolls. The readjustment will be done on a population, basis, as determined by the April census, and the enrolling of eligible voters will be done by a special census next month. The count will be taken in the cities on July 9, and in the country on July 10. Householders' schedules will be distributed in the cities, but in the country «he enumerators will rely on field books. This census is being taken in virtue of powers conferred on the Government the Legislative Amendment Act of last session. At first it was proposed to take the electoral census in conjunction with the main census, but it was finally agreed that the ordinary census work would be complicated enough without the other cou»t. The electoral census does not include merely the names of prospective voters resident in particular houses at the time of the canvassers' visit. The lists are to include the nameß of temporarily absent persons who will be entitled to vote in the district in question. Another obstacle to the simultaneous countings was that April was too remote, for electoral enrolment purposes, from the probable date of | the next general elections. ,
