Two ingenious bnpglars in an American jail recently found their cells infested with rats. They did not object to this, for they devised a means by which their presence could be turned to good account by making them act as sentinels. They began operations by sawing their way out of jail, and on each occasion before beginning work, they scattered breadcrumbs close to their cell doors. When the rasping noise attracted the attention of the ' watchman, the slight ncjise of his approach caused the rats to patter off, so that the burglars stopped sawing and the watchman failed to find out where the sound came from. 1220,
