HOSPITAL RATES.

AN OVERBURDENED DISTRICT. Hamilton, Thursday. The Waikato Hospital Board considered assessments. The amount to be found by contributing bodies is £5500, which is equal to a levy of 4s lid per head of population. Waitomo county contributes £417 5s 4d, Ohura county £169 8s 3d, Kawhia county £152 6s lid, Te Kuiti £lO4 3s 9d, Taumarunui £ll 12s 9d. A motion to reinstate a fee of 5s per day for treatment was defeated, an amendment being carried, "That the matter stand over till after the hospitals' conference." The fee was recently reduced to £1 Is weekly. The Board viewed with some alarm the proposal of Dr Valentine to establish a cottage hospital at Kawhia, the opinion being expressed that other out-districts would have to be treated in a similar manner, that such expenditure would recoil on the Board, and the general hospital system would break down of its own weight. The chairman and member for the district were authorised to accompany Dr Valentine on his visit to Kawhia.
