A LUCKY DISCOVERY.

A striking instance of persistent ill-luck which ended in good luck is that of a miner. Twice he was sc seriously hurt as to be laid off work for nearly a year at each time. Manj attempts he made to better himself and to get a living, but without success. At one time he scraped enough to buy a horse and cart and start hawking, but the horse died a few days after he bought it. He took a little house, which stood in a field, and which had not been occupied for many years. He found the " lum " or chimney wanted cleaning, and to save the expense of a sweep he hoisted a bundle of straw at the end of a pole and set fire to it. A moment later he was startled by a tinkling, and glancing down, saw that the old-fashioned fireplace was covered with gold pieces. Further examination revealed the charred fragments of a leather bag suspended in the chimney. The windfall totalled up to nearly £3OO.
