The Farmers' Auctioneering Co. report:— At Kikutaia on May 25th, we held a clearing sale of cattle, sheep and horses on behalf of Messrs Ambery English and Co., from their Earlscourt property, which has been lately sold, the number of stock being 350 cattle, 850 sheep, and 46 horses. The cattle were a choice lot of steers, fat steers making £7 19s to £ll, fresh 3 year steers £6 12s Gd, fresh 2\ year steers £4 19s to £5 9a, 18 to 20 month steers £3 to £3 12s, 2 year empty heifers £3 13s to £4 13s, calves £1 153, lambs 6s to 7s. A few good medium lambs (is to 7s. A few good medium colts and fillies £27 10s to £32 10=3, lighter draughts £lB to to £23, rising 2 year medium draughts £ls to £2O, yealings £7 to £ls 10s, according to weight. On Thursday, 25th, we held a clearing sale at Gordon, on account of Mr Franklin. There was a large attendance and spirited bidding throughout. The dairy herd of 34 cows and 6 heifers came forward in splendid condition and being well known elicited keen competition. The whole herd, including heifers, averaged £8 16s. The youngest and most forward cows made £9 to £l2 10s, and one cow £ls. Backward cows £6 to £6 15s, in calf heifers £6 to £B, 15 month heifers £4 10s, sows £2 to £2 10s, implements and sundries made usual prices.
At Matamata on May 24th, we held our usual stock sale and yarded 1000 sheep, 386 fat and store cattle, and 100 dairy cattle. Fat and forward bullocks £8 7s, fat cows £6 5s to £7 f 10s, lighter weights £5 to £5 17s 6d,' choice IS month steers £3 15s, 15 month steers £2 17s Gd to £3 Is, choice calves £2 ss, others 34s to 355, younger sorts 21s to 295, store cows £2 ISs to £3 Is, fleshy bulls £5 ss, to £7 7s, other bulls with less condition £3 to £4 4s, choice dairy cows £6 15s to £8 ss, choice heifers £6 to £B, fat ewes 16s 9d, fat lambs 10s, forward lambs 7s Gd to Ss, store lambs 6s, forward conditioned ewes 103 6d, slip pigs 12s to 13s Gd, weaners 9s 6d, ducks 2s sd, fowls 3s to 3s Gd, geese 3s 6d to 4s. At Otorohanga on 26th, we yarded ISO cattle and 234 sheep. Prices ruled well up to Waikato prices: Small fat steers £6 10s, fat cows £5 to £6 3s, store cows £3 ss, choice 18 month heifers in calf £3 us, yearling heifers £1 19s to £2 ISs, choice calves £2 to £2 Is Gd, younger sort 3 275, 18 month steers £3 3s, yearlings £2 12s, in calf cows £5, small lambs 3s 7d, sound mouth ewes in lamb 9s 6d to 10s 2d.
At Cambridge on 26th, we had an entry of 341 cattle. Business was not over brisk. Twenty very forward 4£ year bullocks made £8 7s Gd to £9 6s, killable cows £2 5s to £2 15s, good calves up to £2, small weak calves 15s to 255.
Messrs Dalgety and Co., report:— At Otorohanga on May 26th, we held our second sale in the Otorohanga yards. There was a very fair entry of both cattle and sheep, and a very fair sale resulted for the time of the year. We yarded 126 cattle and 150 sheep, which with the exception of a pen of heifers and a line of hoggets were disposed of either under the hammer or after the sale. Prices: Steers 2 to 2i year £4 14s to £5 10s, heifers in calf £5 to £5 17s 6d, dairy cows £6 10s to £8 10s, calves 26s to 365, forward wethers 15s 9d, no demand for hoggets.
Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Auckland, report having held their usual weekly sale of hides, skins and tallow, etc., on Tuesday, May 23rd:— Hides. —Market firm; we quote, extra stout ox to !%&, stout 7d to 7Jd, medium 6£d to 62, light 5d to Gd, cow best lines to Gd, good 51 to s§, seconds 5d to s*, stags 4Ad, kips 54d to 6d, calf best to 9d, good 7d to 7jfcd, cut and damaged hides 3Jd to sd. Sheepskins. Market firm: best butchers lambs and pelts 3s Gd to 3s lOd, good 2s 9d to 3s 3d, dry skins large to 6s 9d, medium 4s 6d to 5s 6d. Tallow.—market firm; best mixed in shipment casks 28s, good 26s Gi\, medium 245. Rough fat, Ifd to 13d per lb. Cow tails, Is 8d per doz. Horsehair, Is 4d to Is 6d per lb. Bones, good dry, £4 15s per ton. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Auckland, are in receipt of the following cable, from their London office under date May 2th: —Butter. — Market weak; for lower qualities market demoralised; European supplies increasing; Production will probably be large. Totai imports into United Kingdom for week ending Saturday last, 78,000 cwt, for corresponding period last year, 84,000 cwt. Copenhagen official quotation unchanged. We quote: New Zealand butter, salted, 104s; Danish, 108s; finest Australian, salted, 965; finest Australian, unsalted, 98s; good to fine Australian, S4s to 90s, inferior, 76s to 80s. Cheese.—Market weak : white 5Ss, coloured 595. Very unwise to fix a limit in selling price of consignments of poor quality on hand here. Large proportion New South Wales second-hand packages unseasoned timber mouldy; will seriously affect reputation of Australian makers; sales very difficult in competition with European.
