FOOTBALL.
On Saturday last the first "cup" matches of the season under the control of the Maniapoto Rugby Union were decided. Excellent weather prevailed, and the contests attracted
a considerable attendance of the public to the respective grounds. The results of the games were as underdetailed :
OrOSOIIANGA-TE KUITI
This match was played on the Otorohnnga ground, which was in excellent condition, and favoured a fast contest. The playing time was divided into four spells of twenty minutes each. Devine captained Te Kuiti, and Dave. Turner was Otorohanga's skipper. Mr Burke wa3 referee, and Messrs Furber and Poole were touch judges. Te Kuiti won the toss, and played the first spell with the wind. Patton kicked oil for Otcvrohanga* the leather being smartly returned to midfield. After some loose play, Otorohanga were penalised for oil-side play. Devine found touch in Otorohanga's 25. A rush by the home forwards brought play into mid-field again, when Jacobsen secured and found the line with a neat kick well into the visitors' territory. The home forwards, securing possession, all but got over, a scrum 5 yards out eventuating. The home team were here awarded a free kick, but failed to register a score. Loose play in Te Kuiti's territory occupied the remainder of this first 20 minutes' spell; no score. On changing, Te Kuiti kicked off, and their forwards rushed the ball well down field. Tai. Clarke saved. A free kick was soon after awarded Otorohanga, and Jim Clarke booted the oval over the goal line, and the visitors forced. From loose play following the kick out. Kirk secured, and after a good run, found touch about halfway. Half-time sounded ; no score. The third "twenty" was conspicuous by the number of marks, and the leather was kicked up and down field for some considerable time. A rush by Kirk and Hurley compelled the home team to force. W. Bell marked in front of the posts, and Dement landed a goal, drawing first blood for Te Kuiti. The whistle sounded time shortly afterwards; .score —Te Kuiti 3, Otorobonga nil. Te Kuiti kicked off for the last "twenty." During this spell Otorohanga had decidedly the best of the play. A rush by the home forwards ended in Bert. Clarke crossing the line, but he failed to convert. After some play in mid-field, during which the leather was taken into the visitors' quarters, Ellis had hard luck in not getting over, being forced into touch within five yards of Te Kuiti's line. From a free kick the home team went near placing a goal, the ball hitting the cross-bur and rebounding into play. Te Kuiti defended their line very creditably, and Hurley rushed the play to half way. At this stage Hurley received a nasty blow on the head and was forced to retire. The whistle sounded time with no further addition to the score —Otorohanga 3, Te Kuiti 3. Of the visitors, Hurley, Kirk and Clarke did some excellent work, while Patton, D. Turner, Mexted and T. Emery (forwards), and Eliis and J. Clarke (backs) did yeoman service for the home team. MANGA PEE HI -TANEIi OfU WA? These teams met, on neutral territory, to wit, Te Kuiti Recreation ground. The ground was in first-class order. Both teams were somewhat "green," and it was difficult to particularise individual play. Mangapeehi won the toss, and at the outset defended the western goal. From the kick oft Tane. forwards followed up smartly and prevented the return. A series of give and take play followed, in which neither side gained much. The Mang. forwards showed much more combination than their opponents, the game at times being very fast, considering the condition of the players. From a forward rush Mang. scored near the posts, and kicked a goal. This rallied their opponents somewhat and shortly afterwards from a line out near the centre Tane. players got possession, and good passing among their backs resulted in a score near the corner, no goal resulting. Soon afterwards the whistle blew for half time, without further score. The second half was a similar exposition to the first. The Mang. players showed superior play, and added 8 points to their score. The game ended—Mangapeehi 1-3, Tanehopuwai 6. Although beaten in this game, the Tanehopuwai players with practice should give a good account of themselves before the close of the season. Two or three of their backs put in some really good work at times. NEXT SATURDAY'S TEAMS.
