KAWHIA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Kawhia County Council was held on Saturday, May 6th, when there were present, Crs W. J. Shaw (Chairman), A. W. Elliott, R. T. Davies, J. E. Noonan, A. W. Babbage, and Jas. Kearns. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, notified the Council that the metal at present stacked on Konore's section at Te Rau-a-Moa, would be carted out and spread on a bad piece of road near Te Rau-a-Moa, which had not been metalled previously. The District Engineer also informed the. Council -that he expected to advertise the tenders for the Oteke bridge shortly. In reply to a complaint from the Council as to the delay in completing the formation of the Lemon Point-Te Maika road, the Under-secretary, Public Works Department, stated that a sum of £243 4s had been offered to the Council for expenditure on this road. —It was resolved to point out that the vote referred to was for the Te Maika road, not for the Lemon Point-Te Maika road. The District Engineer wrote, pointing out that the Council had submitted no proposals for the expenditure of the grant of £3OO for the Kawhia to Marokopa river road which was intended for widening that portion of the road known as the Mangaohinga gorge. —lt was decided to inform the District Engineer that in offering the grant tq the Council, the .Department made no mention of where it was desired this money should be spent. The State Guaranteed Advances Office notified that the Harbour loan of £IOOO had been finally approved. The Kawhia Chamber of Commerce complained of the delay in the expenditure of Government grants caused by the time taken in having plans approved by the Public Works Department. It was suggested that the delay might be reduced if the plans conid be submitted for approval to the Assistant Engineer at Hamilton, instead of to the District Engineer at Auckland, and the C.o.um'il sepideci to make this suggestion to the Department. It was resolved that Mr Forsyth, of Te Kuiti, be asked upon what terms he will prepare plans, etc., in, connection with the expenditure of the new Harbour loan. The matter of the erection of the bridges o«er the Marakopa river at Piripiri and over the Mangaohinga at Te Anga was discussed and also the condition of the Mangapohue road from the county boundary to the | boundary of the Waitomo County. It was resolved to tbe Minister tq expedite the 'construction of these bridges and also to bring under his notice the unsafe condition of the road.
