BOWLES AND GARDEN FETES.
To The Editor. Sir. I see by your issue of the 19th inst., a letter written by a Mr R. C. Jordan in reference to my charge of accusing Mr A. B. Jordan, Crown Lands Ranger, of playing bowls and attending garden fetes instead of attending to the settlers' wants, and when I come to consider it was not my place to apologise, when I read it in your paper. If you turn up your file you will find it in the first or second issue published after the opening of the Bowling Green at Te Kuiti this season; you will find Mr Jordan's name to play four or five times, and if you remember a garden fete was held in Te Kuiti some three months ago in connection with some church, you will find both Mr and Mrs Jordan attended. Where you probably have made the mistake is in not giving the initials. Now this is an easy matter for you to settle, and clear everybody concerned, which I would like you to do, for as you have printed it in the "Chronicle" it throws a reflection on me; you have made the same mistake in the report of the Land Board. There are two Mr Chiles on the Maihihi Settlement—S. D. and G. E.—and Mr G. E. objects, and as I maintain your paper is responsible for such reports, I hope you will clear all concerned in your next issue. - I am, etc.. SAMUEL D. CHILES. (Mr Jordan's name was down as drawn to play bowls against certain other howlers, but he declined to take part, stating his duties prevented him being regularly there. He may or may not, have attended a garden fete. We don't care, and we think no one else does. If Mr S. D. Chiles had followed the reports of games played he would not have dropped into the mistake he made. He had no justification for making charges without definite proof. We made no mistake in not giving Mr Jordan's initials. They w r jre left out like all other players. We regret Mr G. E. Chiles has been annoyed, and erladly make it clear that Mr S. D. Chiles is responsible for this discussion.—Ed. K.C.C.)
