OTOROHANGA.
vFrom Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of householders to eleet a School Committee for the ensuing year, was lie Id on Monday evening. There was a ooor attendance, the inclemency o\' the weather aeeounting for this to a large extent. Mr F. Fui-titor was voted to the chair The annual report of the proceedings j of the retiring committee was read by j the chairman, and adopted. The balance sheet showed a credit balance iof 1'! (is ;">d. The old committee re--1 tireil "en masse," and as there were j not enough present to form a new committee, it was decided to inform the Board of Education and request ; the appointment of a commissioner. It is to be regretted that the parents ! do not take more interest in school | matters, as although the powers of a I school committee are somewhat of a sinecure, still a good strong committee can prove to the Board of Education that they have the welfare of the i school at heart, and can do their best ! to push ahead educational matters in the district. During the week many visitors were to be seen with maps and pencils "doing the block," and picking out suitable sections; the Government sale on Wednesday has every appearance of being a record one, and big prices will assuredly be the order of the day. Mrs A. E. Holden commences her winter dancing class this evening in Turner's Hall, Otorohanga. Supper is to be provided and with an excellent floor and the best of music, a very enjoyable evening is being anticipated by the young people of Otorohanga and the surrounding districts. These dances will be held fortnightly through the winter. There is a beautiful lake between Messrs Green and Colebrook's store and Mr Clayton's boarding house, on which ducks are to be seen desporting themselves, and small boys sailing model yachts, etc.; there is some talk of importing a "gondola" or two and planting a few ornamental trees around it. This would undoubtedly improve the beauty of the township, were it not for the fact that the lake is in the centre of the principal street, viz., Maniapoto street. We have a j Town Board, who, no doubt, have certain legal business to go though i before they can strike a rate, but we j certainly think they want a gentle j reminder to hurry things along before I winter is upon us. !
A meeting of the musical element in the township was held on Saturday night last, at which it was decided to give a concert in the near future, the funds derived from same to go towards aforesaid duck pond. A rifle shooting match was fired on Easter Monday by the Otorohanga Troop against the Kio Kio Defence Rifle Club, the latter winning by 46 points; for the Territorials the best scores were made by Lieut. Henderson, Privates Clarke, Cowley and Rogers. For the Kio Kio Club President Worthington, Riflemen Cumpstone, Hoskins and Burke. It is to be hoped now that the corp3 have commenced these matches, it will lead to greater interest being taken in this hitherto neglected pastime. I am informed that registration under the Defence Act is proceeding very satisfactorily, also that our Scout movement will soon be galvanised into life again by the advent of new officers, who will take a keen interest in the boys. The annual meeting of the Otorohanga Football Club was held in Mr Hunter's boarding house, a good muster of club members being present. Mr Whyte was voted to the chair. After ihe minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and adopted, the Secretary and Treasurer submitted his report and balance sheet, the latter showing a credit balance of £3 16s sd. A credit balance of 3s 6d was shown on the insurance fund. A vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing officials. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr Jennings, M.P.; President, Mr W.
