VALUE OF LOCAL SALES. When prices eased a little in the beginning nf the year, and stupid rumours were circulated that the decline was the result of "bearing" tactics on the part of buyers, many growers refused to accept the position and, turning a deaf ear to their brokers, shipped Home. Subsequent events have proved conclusivey that the tone of the Wellington market at the New Year was an absolutely correct reflection of the state of the dominating markets in the northern hemisphere, and that the only foundation for the "bear" story existed in the imagination of the interested friend of London marketing from whom the statement no doubt emanated. The growers who refused to accept ruling prices at local sales and have shipped Home have now in the majority of cases good reason to regret this action. At the second Wellington sale a grower refused SSd for part of his clip a coarse crossbred lot—and it has only realised SJd at the current London sales, a direct loss of Ljd per pound. Year in and year out it is undoubted that the grower who patronises the local sales will have all the best ol it- in the long run, not only from a direct monetary point of view, but by reason of having his money in hand without delay and the knowledge that he knows just svhere he stands- for .selling at once at the highest ruling rates in the world, instead of acting the role of epeculatur and sending his product to the other side of the world for realisation and bearing all the risk and cost of such a proceeding.
