HOLIDAYMAKERS' TRIALS.

_ & .---. HELD UP BY FLOODS. j l!Y TKLKI.KAI-H. —l'Ui-:SS \ SSI >. I ATIfIN". J Auckland, This Day. Several holiday visitors are in an unfortunate predicament at Karekare on the West Coast. Being flood bound as a result of the recent rains, they were prevented from returning to Auckland till the waters subsided. Mr H. A. Ellison returned from the conference of Government valuers at Wellington this morning. One of the important matters discussed was the real values of land, the conference coming to the conclusion that the freehold value was the only value to base valuations on. This includes Crown lands, native lands, and leasehold lands.

It is not generally known that in the conduct of public elections the most stringent provisions are laid down for preventing anything in the nature of canvassing or influencing voters. For instance anyone exhibiting anything in the nature of a model ballot paper on that day is liable to two years' imprisonment. Bribery includes the giving of food or drink or an order to procure such. This is subject to a heavy penalty. Voters should not hang about the doors_ of the polling bcoth after recording their votes. Cabled information states that at the clearing sales of blood stock, a Royal Artillery-Goldhurst colt fetched rive hundred guineas; a MalsterSymmetry filly seven hundred and fifty guineas; a Malster-Lady Florence filly eight hundred and fifty guineas; a Orgil-Kerry filly four hundred and fifty guineas. £I4S makes a liberal total for the 49 prizes offered this year by the proprietors of Tonking's Linseed Emulsion, particulars of which will be found in another column. The competitions are attractive and do not appear to be unduly difficult. Some of our readers should be among the prize winners. Then there i 3 the public prize. We hope to see some worthy object in this district win the £IOO.
