The Terra Nova arrived in Patterson's Inlet, Stewart Island, last night. The following is from the official report supplied by Captain Scott: — When three days out we encountered a heavy gale and shipped much water. The pumps were choked, and water in the engine room forced us to put the fires out. We were compelled to bale for many hours with buckets. The position was looking serious when the weather moderated and the pumps were cleared. We lost two ponies and one dog. We entered the pack ice on IHh December and spent 21 days in pushing through. We had great difficulty in traversing 380 miles, which is the greatest extent of pack yet recorded. We then decided to make our winter quarters at Cape Evan?. We had the. misfortune to lose a motor sledge through a hole in the ice and had considerable diiiiculty in keeping the ship ancored. Once she was driven on a shoal but relloated without damage. We are now departing on our sledge journey south and expect being cut oil" from Cape Evans for two montns. On the 25th .January the ship turned along the Barrier to Whales Bay, where they found the Fram with Captain Amundsen, wintering with a full equipment for his journey to the Pole. He report:; the health of his party as excellent. The Fram is proceeding to Buenos Ayrea and returning the following season to embark Amundsen. Then they left for McMurdo Sound and found the party all well. The eastern party is wintering at Cape Adare, and their health is excellent.
