THE CITY BEAUTIFUL.
At the final meeting of the committee of the recent garden fete in aid of the Beautifying Society's Funds a balance-sheet was presented and adopted showing the total receipts in connection with the fete to be £521 3s sd, and the expenses £ll3 4s 9d, leaving a clear profit of £407 ISs Sd. This amount, which exceeds the most sanguine expectations, will enable the society to carry out a good beautifying programme this year. The society, during the present week, received a shipment of several hundred ornamental trees from Japan, while others are on the way from Australia. Working bees started the season' 3 work by planting out Japanese trees and every Saturday for the next six months will see a working bee or bees busy in various districts under the society's care. So far the parent society has four district branches working under it, and steps are being taken to form new branches at Gonville and Castlecliff. Among the activities of the Wanganui East branch may be mentioned a proposal, which will probably he carried into effect this year, to plant an avenue of scarlet flowering gums nearly a mile in length. A similar scheme is in contemplation by the St. John's branch, which proposes to plant the sides of the railway line between St. John's and Aramoho with the same trees and also flowering wattles.
