THE CITY BEAUTIFUL.
To The Editor. Sir, May I encroach upon your I valuable space to air a subject 1 have very much at heart, that is, to do something to improve the scenic vista of our Borough. Here arid now is the need of an voluntary organisation such as has accomplished much in other centres. We have a good many gentlemen, in public as well as in private life, who are helping our town along its assured destiny as a future important centre of a great district. These workers' astonishing achievement during the past year are nothing short of marvellous, though our municipality is but an infant in its civic career. We cat) boast of an energetic and progressive Cuuncii, and a great work well under way. Then there is the bowling green, racecourse, A. and P. Association with a promised show next year, Fire Brigade (correctly uniformed), lodges, clubs, etc., all successfully launched and thriving, and yet among all these there does not seem to be a movement towards forming a Beautifying Society, Is not this the time and opportunity, when all our streets and paths are being dealt with by the Council, to spare no effort in making these bare streets and unsightly spaces beautiful for the residents and visitors? Note what has been done in Wanagnui, mostly through the efforts of such a private society. lam satisfied that there is no lack of public-spirited men of the right calibre to whom great credit and honour is due for what they have already done, and once they started such a move we would soon have pretty streets, esplanades and shady trees everywhere, in place of dust and ugliness.—l am, etc., J. ROSENBERG. Te Kuiti, March 21, 1911.
