HEALTH INSPECTORS.
HOSPITAL BOARD DISCUSSION. THE NEW SCHEME. A special meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board was held on Thursday morning, at the Old Borough Council Chambers to consider the appointment of one full and one assistant sanitary inspector for the whole of the Waikato Hospital district, under the new scheme proposed by the department,, particulars of which have already been published. Dr Makgill was in attendance and he reiterated the proposition made last week by Dr Valintine while he also placed before the board a schedule of the amounts required from the board towards the salaries and expense of the officers. He pointed out that at present the local bodies in the Waikato district, including the Thames and liuntly were paying the salaries of three inspectors at a cost of over £4OO, while under the new scheme Huntly and Thames, which had their own inspectors would be included in the Waikato district, and would contribute towards the maintenance of one full inspectox* and his assistant. The board would now be required to pay £127 10s towards their upkeep, the Government subsidising by a further similar amount. The responsibility for the control of infections diseases would under the new scheme be under the control of the board's new officers. This does not refer to the inspection of drains of any description or of sanitary work, which is under the direct control of the local body concerned, but only refers to infectious diseases, the proper isolation and treatment of infected people, the proper disinfection oi : clothing, bedding, etc. Mr Young pointed out that if the board interfered between the local bodies and the inspector regarding drain, friction would be immediately created. The Public Health Department would, therefore, make its own arrangements with the respective local bodies as to what they should contribute to the services of the inspector for local work. The Department proposes to endeavour to get from the local bodies, by means of voluntary contributions, the sum of £172 10a. On the motion of Mr Young, seconded by Mr Keeley, it was decided to act on the suggestion of the department.
