OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL
ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Ohura County Council was held in the Council chambers on Saturday, 11th March. Present —Councillors Stevenson (chairman) Risk, Stuart, O'Brien and Sandison. Correspondence was received from — Public Works Department re Main Ohura road.- —The Under-Secretary wrote that the Minister is prepared to authorise a further sum of £2OOO for metalling main Ohura road if the Council is prepared to find its quota at the rate of £ for £.- Waikaka Road: A sum of £76 is granted to complete culverts on this road. —Tokirima road: The available balance on this road has been authorised to the Resident Engineer for expenditure. Hukataiii road. The Resident Engineer wrote that the Council had the sum of £2(5 15s lOd for which they had not submitted proposals. Ohura Road.—Mr G. D. Joyner notified Council that he had a kiln of papa burnt and would be ready to spread it next week. Claim for Damage. —Mr S. E. Meredith sent account for damage done to fence by road contractors. —Decided that claim be not entertained. Kururau Riding ''Thirds." —J. L. Spauli wrote on behalf of settlers on Otunui road north objecting to their ' • thirds" being spent on Kururau road.—Decided that the matter be left over until Councillor McKinnon is present. The "thirds" to be withdrawn from expenditure in the meantime.
Mahobora Road. —Mr G. Denison wrote that he had arranged to have work done on this road, provided that the County Engineer gave authority to proceed. Polling on Unimprovod Value Rating.—Mangaroa booth, for 41, against 10; Tatu, 5- 0; Otangiwai, 80—2; Niho Niho, 12—2; Roto, 12—1; total, for 100, against 15. "Thirds." -The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote that £785 was approved for expenditure and suggested that in future Mr Tolme, Crown Lands ranger, could certify his approval before the amounts were sent to the Land Board. Closing of Shops. —Mr A. M. K. Moir wrote- for information re the closing of shops in Ongarue. Waikaka Road.—Mr E. Mossrnan wrote re bridges on the road. Deputation from Kaeaea. —Messrs McKenzie and Keighley waited on the Council to have certain sections separated from Ohura County and united to the Waitomo County.—Resolved that Council agree to proposed alteration. Brand Registration District.—The registration office for the Ohura County is the Borough of Hamilton, the registration officer being Alfred Henry Burkill. Bridge to Section 9. —Decided that the Council pay £6l 4s (3d on account of bridge balance to be paid by Mr Williams. Work in Mangaroa Township. — Decided to return all available money to the department for expenditure, as all tenders received by the County Council has been too high. The long time that the contractors have to wait for their final payment prevents them doing the work at a reasonable price; also the requirement that the work has to be passed by two different engineers is detrimental to contractors. Deputation from Waitewhena. —Mr Barnett, on behalf of settlers on Waitewhena road waited on the Council to have the work of widening the road proceeded with as soon as possible. — Resolved that the engineer be instructed to lay off work as previously instructed. Proposed Alteration of Boundaries. -The Minister for Internal Affairs wrote requesting Council to forward agreement between Clifton and Ohura Counties. Forwarded as requested. Mangaroa River Bridge.—The carting of grave! over bridge has damaged the decking; and the engineer recommended that the decking be at once removed and replaced by diagonal rimu decking. Road Loans. —Order-in-Council validating Waikaka loan has to be Gazetted when loan will be granted.— Decided to proceed at once with the Ga'/etting. Waikaka Road.- Cr Stuart moved that the Resident Engineer be written tn that the Council is prepared to spend the £250 voted for the Waikaka road culvert and bridges and that the £250 voted for Pirere road will give the settlers access. Speeial Meeting.—A special meeting to fix boundaries and number of ridings was held and it whs decided to increase the number of ridings to nine and two new ridings named Niho Niho and Turoto were added.
