The Mayor of Te Kuiti will present his first financial statement at the next, meeting of the Council. Tiie Awakino dog trials have been postponed until Tuesday and Wednesday, April 17th and 18th. Mr W. Massey, M.P., leader of the Opposition, is at present making a tour of the King Country. Mr F. W. Lang, M.P., accompanies him. Mr I'lummer, school inspector, vi:iited the Taumarunui school last Wednesday, ami on Thursday proiwded to Tangitu to investigate the .uMilicaton from the settlers for a school in the block. The following is from the Manawatu "Standard":—"Evicienly Matiere doesn't mean to let Ma-igaroa get ahead of it: A proposal is on foot to launch a newspaper at Matiere, a rising district in the Taranaki province. The sawmills in that district are full of orders. Steam milking plants have been ordered for next season, and both batiks report a good volume of business. As a correspondent writes, 'it only wants a few more bachelors to get fixed up, and there will be a demand for a branch railway and a schoolhouse.' " An advertisement appears in this issue notifying the fact that Messrs Larritt and Young have dissolved partnership. The business will in future be carried on by Mr D. J. \ oung. During the past few days there has been much activity in the selling of town sections. Agents report a fairly busy time selling sections and houses, alos a tew business places. Mr J. B. Young reports having sold fourteen town sections during the past couple of days. A most, enjoyable picnic was spent by both young and old in Mr Watkins' paddock, Rangitoto No. 1 Settlement, DO Si iturday last, it being a perfect day for such a gathering. Prizes were given by Messrs Johnson and Co., Green and Colebrook, Earl and Earl, Isaacs, Laidlaw Leeds and Co., and Willis, our local saddler. These prizes were most valuable and foot running and games were enjoyed by the settlers who well deserved the day's fun. Some of these walked twelve miles, which will show the spirit our settlers possess. On Sunday, while going to church, an unfortunate accident happened to Mr Andrew Carmichael, of Mairoa. He was thrown from his horse, and dislocated hn shoulder joint. Medical assistance was called and the sufferer is now progressing favourably.

A meeting of the General Committee of the A. and P. Association will be held in the Loan and Mercantile Company's office on Wednesday, :.:'.>th March. In the Waitomo and Hauturu districts there are about 25 telephones P«*mg installed in settlers' homes, and m all, 15 miles of telephone wire is being used. Settlers in the Ratanui and Matiga-o-hae districts are complaining about the very bad state of repair in which the Kawhiu Mahoenui road exists.
